Amal Augustine is the founder of UniMarket (大學市集), a student marketplace born at National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung and now used by students across Taiwan. He built it to solve a problem he lived himself: students buying, selling and renting within a campus community they can actually trust.

He has more than a decade of hands-on software development experience across Flutter, Dart, Unity, C#, ASP.NET, Java and JavaScript, and has shipped 10+ apps and startups spanning marketplaces, games, quizzing and education. Amal studied computer science at St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi, and is pursuing a master's degree in computer science at National Sun Yat-sen University.

He writes about student entrepreneurship at NSYSU, building startups from a university campus in Taiwan, and the practical side of taking a product from an idea to real users — pricing, growth, SEO, and the unglamorous engineering in between.

A startup born at NSYSU

UniMarket started the way a lot of useful things do — from an everyday problem on campus. Students at National Sun Yat-sen University were selling textbooks, bikes, fridges and furniture to each other through scattered chat groups, with no way to tell who was a real student and no record of what had been agreed.

The fix was a marketplace built specifically for university communities: accounts tied to a verified university email, listings organised by campus, and housing and flatmate matching for the students who move cities to study. What began as an NSYSU project now serves students across Taiwan, with local merchants offering student-only deals around campus.

Amal writes here about that process — the parts of student entrepreneurship in Taiwan that rarely make it into a pitch deck: getting the first hundred users, pricing something students can actually afford, working with local businesses, and the engineering behind a product built while studying.
